Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their family members to come to Canada as permanent residents. Family sponsorship is one of the most important aspects of Canadian immigration, reflecting Canada’s commitment to family reunification.
Spousal Sponsorship
Sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner to become a permanent resident of Canada.
Who You Can Sponsor:
- Legally married spouse
- Common-law partner (living together 1+ year)
- Conjugal partner (relationship 1+ year, can’t live together due to barriers)
Parent & Grandparent Sponsorship
Bring your parents and grandparents to Canada permanently through the annual lottery system.
Requirements:
- Meet minimum income requirements (LICO + 30%)
- Submit interest to sponsor during open period
- Selected through random lottery
- Sponsor is financially responsible for 20 years
Dependent Children Sponsorship
Sponsor your dependent children to join you in Canada as permanent residents.
Eligible Dependents:
- Under 22 years old and not married/common-law
- 22+ years old if dependent due to physical/mental condition
- Biological or adopted children
- Can be included with spousal sponsorship
Sponsor Requirements
To sponsor a family member, you must meet certain requirements:

- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
- Be at least 18 years old
- Living in Canada or planning to return when sponsored person becomes PR
✓ Financial Requirements
- Prove you can financially support the person you’re sponsoring
- Meet minimum income (for parents/grandparents only)
- Sign undertaking to provide for basic needs for sponsorship period
✓ Other Requirements
- Not be in prison, bankrupt, or under removal order
- Not be in default of previous sponsorship obligations
- Not have been convicted of violent crime, offense against relative, or sexual offense

Document Collection
Gather required documents including identity documents, relationship proof, financial documents, police certificates, and medical exams.
Application Preparation
Complete all forms accurately, prepare supporting letters, organize documents, and ensure everything meets IRCC requirements.
Submission & Processing
Submit complete application package to IRCC. Monitor application status and respond promptly to any requests for additional information.
Decision & Landing
Upon approval, sponsored person receives Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and can complete landing process in Canada.

What is a Super Visa?
A Super Visa allows parents and grandparents to visit Canada for up to 5 years at a time without renewing their status. Valid for 10 years.
